Machine Learning Scientist / Bioinformatics Scientist/ Computational Biology Scientist

About the company:
Aureon Laboratories applies “Systems Pathology” to develop predictive clinical tests for cancer care as well as to facilitate bio-pharmaceutical research and development. Aureon's personalized predictive pathology technology has the potential to significantly advance the state of clinical medicine.

Allied with major cancer centers, Aureon is primarily focusing on oncology-based clinical tests to assist physicians in developing appropriate treatment strategies for staging patients with cancer. By employing proprietary tissue analysis technologies Aureon also supports bio-pharmaceutical companies in their quest to develop better targeted therapeutics.

Aureon was co-founded by leading physician-scientists at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Yale Cancer Center, and Albert Einstein College of Medicine as well as investors from Sprout Group and Atlas Venture.

About the position:
Aureon’s Machine Learning Department receives data defining a patient’s disease profile from a variety of domains, including clinical information (i.e., race, age), bio-molecular marker expression, and image analysis of the patient’s tissue. The department interacts with doctors, biologists, and other mathematical/technical experts to analyze and integrate diverse information domains and build models of cancer growth.

Tasks include:

  • Developing novel algorithms and approaches and/or adapting/improving existing technologies for survival analysis and prognostic predictions
  • Developing feature selection procedures to distill through large datasets in order to identify crucial pieces of information, including gene expression and biomarker data
  • Addressing challenges of missing data and small cohorts that necessitate novel approaches
  • Analyzing and resolving institutional variances in datasets
  • Coordinating with renown worldwide research institutions to design studies and analyses

While commercially oriented, positions are research based, and individuals continue to publish papers, etc. Additionally, candidates will work in a small company environment and interact daily with doctors, image analysis experts, molecular scientists and others to solve challenges at the unique confluence of systems pathology where many diverse fields converge.

Required Qualifications/Background:

  • Background in regression modeling, feature discovery/selection, optimization, dataset manipulation, exploratory data analysis
  • Advanced degree in computer science/bioinformatics/related quantitative fields
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with respect to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Ability to positively interact and engage as a team member within a collaborative environment

Additional Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience with support vector machines
  • Experience in survival analysis, Cox proportional hazard modeling
  • Familiarity with Matlab and/or SAS
  • Experience in Software Engineering: design, documentation, etc.

Compensation and benefits include: Competitive salary; stock options; 401(k); medical/dental/life insurance; flexible working hours and paid vacation. This is a full-time position located in our Yonkers, New York office.
